The Emotions of Selling Your House
1. EXCITED
When selling a home, preparation is a huge part of the equation. At this stage, sellers will find themselves filled with a rush of excitement, since the decision to sell their property typically coincides with a major life change; like to buy a new home. The thrill factor of looking forward to moving can, however, cross over into preparing to sell.
You carefully choose your real estate agent or a real estate firm, whichever works for you, and get photographs taken for the brochures and promotion, and now, putting your house to the market for sale after all the statutory process. Many of the sellers and clients that we have interacted with, had a good run in their houses with many memories that will be cherished for years to come. That nostalgia along with all the work that's been put into marketing to getting it ready for sale can leave you feeling that your home should sell in no time.
2. BLAME
This emotion is not a pretty one. The house may have only been in the market for a couple of weeks, but patience is a virtue, not a requirement. You are seeing people coming in and out to see your home, but it is not selling. A few low-ball offers are getting you upset, and you are starting to place blame on the real estate agent or even the market of home buyers that are starting to flood your dreams.
3. CONCERN
As your home is on the market, and it's a waiting game. The real estate agent or company hasn't called regarding walk-throughs or potential buyers, and it is getting worrisome. A few couples have taken a look but nobody is doing anything. You try to reign back your concern, but then emotions start taking a toll.
4. ACCEPTANCE
You have had some time to calm down. You have talked with your agent, and you have been assured that everything that can be done is. Going forward, you have accepted that the home will sell when the right buyer comes across it. Unfortunately, it's a waiting game, but it is important to take a step back and let your agent do the job, and keeping up the home for staging purposes is all you can do.
5. RELIEF
At this stage, it looks like the light at the end of the tunnel. An offer has been made and negotiations are settled. All inspections are inspections are also taken care of and any fixes have been addressed, and statutory legal process followed. It is a sad day in a way, but at the same time, it's exciting to be moving forward.
From the outside, it's easier said than done to keep a level head and take everything in stride while you are selling a home. The sale is however very personal, and that will bring deep emotions into the picture. Frustration will happen. You will get anxious, sad, upset and pessimistic at times, but a good real estate agent that convey realistic expectations will undoubtedly help.
So, as a potential seller of a property, try to prepare yourself as much as possible by recognizing that these emotions are normal, and keep in mind that they are fleeting as long as you have the right people surrounding you.
